Microsoft Campus Goes Greener

June 19, 2008 – 5:02 pm

As if they were not green enough here at the Redmond campus, they just took the global cooling imitative higher.  So I’m here in Redmond at Bld 40 doing what we do here and I come out of the meeting room for an afternoon break to find that the entire kitchen in the break room looks different.  The changes were subtle but many.  The green paper coffee cups were the first indicator something had changed (besides how hot that coffee cup was compared to the prior polystyrene cups) and then I notice the green signs with information about the change to much more.

Here is a list of what has changed:

  • Paper Plates and Bowls
  • Paper Cups
  • Biodegradable Cutlery
  • Wooden Stir Sticks (for coffee)
  • Removal of the Polystyrene Recycle Bins.

While a really appreciate the effort even thought I don’t buy into this whole global warming, I still don’t like the pressure.  When I walk up to the row of recycle slots to empty my food tray I actually start to sweat.  I get a nervous feeling deep inside that I may accidentally throw the wrong item in the wrong slot.  Did they get my error on camera?  Will an alarm sound?  Will Al Gore run out and attempt to arrest me?  Do you think I can out run him?

Seriously,  kudos to MS for taking more than just another small step to show they care about the environment.
