Top-Ten Vista Facts You Should Know
June 4, 2008 – 10:59 amOK, so the MAC commercials are funny and there has been some “challenges” with Vista both technically and from consumer adoption in SMB but nevertheless it is excellent OS with a now proven track record when sold/deployed with the right hardware for the right reasons. Here is a handy little Top-Ten list courtesy of my local MS LED BD Manager.
1) Fastest Selling
Over 140M copies sold through March
2) Millions Deployed
Over 2.5+ million enterprise PCs are running Windows Vista around the world
3) Most Secure
Less than half the vulnerabilities of XP, 60% less malware than XP
4) Device Compatibility
Over 77,000 devices supported – over 57K added since RTM
5) App Compatibility
200+ LOB apps unblocked 5M+ seats, 99% of NPD top consumer apps work
6) Solid Performance
3rd party tests show performance parity between SP1 and XPSP2
7) Lowest Mobile TCO
Studies show $251/PC in cost savings on mobile PCs
“Greenest”
Every 10 PCs migrated to Windows Vista = 1 car off the road
9) Analyst Support
Gartner says “Don’t Skip” – Forrester sees “Strong Value”
10) Customer Value
Avanade, Banco Bradesco, Cerner, Citibank, EDS, HP, City of Zurich

I’m be a little suspicious about the 2.5 million enterprise PC count. Why? Because it’s very possible that although they were *shipped* with Windows Vista, they were *downgraded* to Windows XP Professional. Why? Because at an Enterprise level, they have apps that are not Vista-ready yet, whether they’re homegrown or commecial/retail.
Now, after having seen a great presentation by Steve Rose at a Vista “re-launch” event sponsored by our local users group, I’d be completely prepared to use Vista with Windows Server 2008. From a small business perspective, especially in Small Businesses where the Line of Business applications are not providing Vista client software yet, I’m sticking with Windows XP.
